Before they exchange wedding vows, area brides and grooms should prepare to be wowed at the Opelika-Auburn News’ 2010 Bridal Expo.

This year marks the eighth that the event has been held, said coordinator Melissa D. Blackburn. The 2010 Bridal Expo is a fundraiser for the Opelika-Auburn News’ Newspapers in Education program.

Brides attending the 2010 Bridal Expo will be eligible to win thousands in door prizes, including a $1,500 photo package from Flip Flop Foto, a $1,200 Honeymoon Package from My Travel at Midtown, a $500 in store purchases from Swanson Diamond Center, a $500 Bridal Suite from Fountainview Mansion and Rental Facilities from Jules Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

“We also give away favors and random door prizes as brides register,” Blackburn said. At last year’s expo, 30 percent of the brides that attended received gifts.

This year’s 2010 Bridal Expo will also feature a fashion show sponsored by Clothes Rack in the Marriott Amphitheater. Clothes Rack will also be giving away a $250 gift certificate at each of their 1:30 and 3 p.m. fashion shows at the expo.

There will be several caterers, photographers, dress shops and specialty gift merchants present at the 2010 Bridal Expo as well.

“We are overflowing with vendors this year and still receiving calls,” Blackburn said.

Cooper Ray, an Opelika native and owner of http://www.socialprimer.com, will also be in attendance at the 2010 Bridal Expo.

“Subscribers to the Opelika-Auburn News can get an inside glimpse of the expo through our annual Bridal Guide which will be published in Sunday’s newspaper,” Blackburn said. “The Bridal Guide is a feature we use all year to let brides and grooms know who to call locally and how to prepare for the best day of their lives.”

As a wedding planner, Sue Frank sees herself as someone who can help brides "connect all the dots" when it comes to preparing for their big day. As a new business owner, she's ready to let them know her services are available.

Frank, who owns Simply Unique Events in Lancaster, is one of about 30 local business owners who will promote their wedding services Saturday at the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette's seventh annual bridal show.

As a result, dozens of local brides who are stuck in the planning stages will leave Saturday's event with information on everything from local florists to caterers to photography to apparel, Eagle-Gazette Event Coordinator Risha Wagner said.

"Those who come can expect to see a lot of choices that will help them decide, 'Is this something I want to do for my wedding?'" said Wagner, who is organizing the show.

Seventy brides have already pre-registered for the free event, which will take place at the Ohio University Lancaster Campus this year. Brides who register before or at the event are eligible to receive one of about 30 giveaways compiled by the event's exhibitors.

In addition, guests will have the opportunity to sit in on a live bridal show in the auditorium of the Ohio University Lancaster Campus. Models will showcase about 75 different dresses, including bridal gowns and bridesmaid and prom dresses. All the dresses are from Personal Touch in Lancaster.

"The auditorium we're using for the fashion show is really going to make the show unique and help create the mood," Wagner said. "We're going to have the doors (to the auditorium) closed until right before the show starts, so it's going to be a surprise to everyone when they walk in."

Wagner said she feels the show will offer a lot of variety for even the most indecisive of brides. She said there are five or six new exhibitors at this year's event, as well as some more exhibitors one might not expect to see at the average bridal show.

"We'll have two Realtors there this year and representatives from banks because, when couples are planning their wedding, they also may be looking into opening joint bank accounts or looking for a new house," she said.

Frank, who will promote her new business for the first time at the bridal show, is the only event planner registered as an exhibitor at the show. She said she's excited to promote her services to local brides and get her name out there.

"My being there to handle everything gives the bride the opportunity to enjoy her day, and spares her mom or best friend from being tied up in all the last-minute details," Frank said. "It's a great service."

Ellen Ricketts, co-owner of Perfect Weddings in Lancaster, is a regular at the event. Ricketts, whose store is one of the largest and oldest family-owned bridal stores in the state, said the bridal show is a good way for her to let new clients know about everything her store has to offer.

"It's a place where brides can get a lot of their questions answered in one trip," she said.

wedding dress

Greenwood consignment boutique Blue Sky Bridal has a large selection of traditional wedding gowns, many listed at prices that are half the original retail price.

Ask any bride-to-be what the most important, most worried-over detail of her upcoming wedding is, and chances are she's going to answer: "The dress!" What you wear to your wedding is a direct expression of who you are, and of course every bride wants to find the perfect piece. Many women worry that they will have to lower their expectations in order to afford a gown, but Seattle offers a lot of options for finding the dress you want at the right price, whether you're looking for a formal gown or a sleek cocktail dress.

If you have your heart set on a traditional wedding dress, try one of Seattle's wedding consignment stores. Greenwood's Blue Sky Bridal has a gorgeous selection of wedding dresses, ranging from beach casual to princess perfect. They even carry some of the better-known bridal designers: We spotted a brand new PC Mary's dress for $500 and a Winnie Couture dress for $825. Most dresses are half off their original retail price; all of them are four years old or newer; and Blue Sky carries a wide range of sizes to fit every bride. If you're on the Eastside, try Champagne Taste in Kirkland for more bridal consignment. Finally, check out Cicada Bridal in downtown Seattle for their upcoming sales: For the rest of January, all bridal dresses are 10 percent off (when paid in full), and all samples are priced from $200 to $900. In March, all sample gowns will be 25 percent off. Cicada also has a well-stocked clearance rack with dresses from previous seasons at up to 50 percent off.

Vintage is always a great option for the bride on a budget, especially if you're a smaller size or are looking for a cocktail-style dress. Retro styles are very fashionable today, and buying vintage will ensure you wear a one-of-a-kind dress. Seattle is chock-a-block with great vintage stores, some of which have dedicated bridal sections. Pretty Parlor on Capitol Hill has a well-edited bridal section, including dresses from the 1930s through the 1970s, ranging from cocktail dresses to full-blown wedding gowns. Most of their selection is priced at less than $100, leaving you plenty left over for a really cute pair of shoes.

Both Red Light locations have several racks of '50s and '60s party dresses in a good range of sizes. The dresses run the style gamut from a simple, classic sheath to a flouncy gown with a tulle skirt. If you're willing (or eager!) to wear a non-traditional color you'll definitely have more to choose from here. Again, most vintage dresses at Red Light are priced well under $100, making them a very cost-effective option. If you want a vintage dress, it's a good idea to start looking early in order to give yourself enough time to find exactly what you want. If you have a specific dress style in mind, many vintage stores will be happy to keep your information on file and call you when they find something similar.

Dresses made by indie designers are another good option for the cost-conscious bride. Northwest line Frocky Jack Morgan consists of artfully deconstructed vintage clothing that is pieced back together to create one-of-a-kind confections in all styles and sizes. You can find Frocky Jack Morgan dresses, which range in price from $100 to $350, at Velouria, Seattle's mainstay boutique for independent designers.

Capitol Hill boutique Vu is also a great resource for brides who are looking for an affordable way to have a standout wedding. Lots of ladies in the know shop at Vu for high-end vintage clothing and accessories. What many women don't know, however, is that boutique owner Huan Vu does a lot of work with Seattle brides. A great way to get the dress of your dreams is to find an affordable vintage piece and take it in for some gussying up. From basic fit alterations to beadwork and embroidery, Vu can make your dress look like a million bucks for around a few hundred. He is also happy to use his vintage connections to help you find the style of dress you are looking for, and to help your bridesmaids find their dresses as well. Depending on your budget, you can get everything from alterations to a fully executed vision for your entire bridal party. Of course, this all takes time, so call to make an appointment for a consultation well in advance.

modern-wedding-dress

Wedding belles: (from left) a chic draped dress from Bottega Veneta would be perfect for a city wedding; Chloe's flowing silk gown; and Erdem's lace frock is a stylish alternative for the modern bride.

New bride-to-be Kate Moss may join the trend for off-the-peg wedding gowns – and if she buys hers online, she can even skip the endless fittings, says Clare Coulson.

News of Kate Moss’s engagement last week to her rock-star boyfriend Jamie Hince should have her fashion-designer friends aflutter. Although she is likely to keep the dress under wraps until her big day, one thing is certain: the supermodel will not plump for a traditional wedding gown.

She’s not alone. Increasingly, women are opting for more fashion-forward dresses for their nuptials. The demand is so great that Net-a-Porter is launching an online wedding boutique next month, packed with cool pieces for brides who wouldn’t dream of wearing a poufy meringue.

The boutique will sell “anything that could be worn as a wedding dress”, from commissioned pieces, including Stella McCartney’s black lace dresses reworked in off-white, to looks straight from the catwalk. There are layered plissé dresses from Chloé and pretty tea dresses in organza from Marc Jacobs, as well as sleek sheaths from Roland Mouret and Jil Sander. It will also stock Lanvin’s Blanche collection, designer Alber Elbaz’s annual collection of dresses worked in a similar vein. The current range includes draped asymmetric silk dresses cinched with ribbon sashes and silk flapper-style dresses trimmed with cream marabou feathers.

Shoes, jewellery and lingerie are also available, and everything is delivered gift-wrapped in sleek white boxes.

The luxury e-tailer has already dipped its toe into the market with a small boutique that sits within the main site. “We had an amazing reaction when we first started to sell a few pieces, so it felt like the perfect thing to start doing in a big way,” says buying director Holli Rogers. “There’s a bride out there who doesn’t want fuss. Maybe she’s too busy, or decides to get married on a whim, or it’s her second wedding and she doesn’t want to go through five fittings again.”

For women used to shopping online, the idea of buying a wedding outfit can be no different from any other purchase. “I would have had no qualms about buying my dress online, if the boutique had existed when I was getting married,” says Jessica Bates, who got married wearing a Moschino oyster chiffon column dress in Chelsea last summer. “I shop online for clothes regularly, so I feel really comfortable with the way it works – trying on my dress at home would have been amazing.”

Convenience aside, for many modern brides, the idea of dressing up in a big gown that bears no relation to how they look on any other day of their life is off-putting. As designer Erdem Moralioglu, who has recently been commissioned to create a short silk dress for one magazine editor, puts it: “On your wedding day you want to look like the very best version of you – not feel that you are 'dressed up’ as a bride.”

Arabella Cooper, who got married in a cream sheath dress by Dolce & Gabbana at her small wedding last autumn, agrees. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to look devastating on the day, or that I didn’t want to floor my husband when I walked into the chapel. I wanted to look like myself, not what the wedding industry says I should look like.” She’s typical of many women in their twenties, thirties and beyond who refuse to buy into the “princess for a day” image that the bridal industry peddles.

Although cost was not a factor for Cooper, being able to wear the dress again definitely was. “What a waste to have something divine in your closet that you can’t ever find an occasion for again. That, to me, is a fashion faux pas.”

The current trend for all-white ensembles means there is plenty of choice for brides-to-be this spring. Bottega Veneta’s crisp, draped dresses and Erdem’s neat long-sleeved lace frocks would be perfect for a chic city wedding, topped with stunning vintage jewellery. Chloé’s fluid, off-white sleeveless silk gown with pleated chiffon train, or Rochas’s floaty silk dress with full skirt, would be cool enough for a wedding abroad.

And unlike traditional wedding dresses, looks from ready-to-wear collections work on older brides. Jil Sander’s exquisite ruffle-front shift, for example, would look elegant on a bride of any age – and you could wear it for years after the big day, too.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year with an exhibit on Princess Diana.

The princess's famous wedding dress will be on display, as well as other personal items. Randy Van Antwerp is Deputy Director of the museum. He says the exhibit chronicles her life from childhood to adulthood.

"I think there's a lot of connection that people have with her even though they didn't know her personally," says Van Antwerp, "And I think the exhibition gives people a chance to have that personal tie to her."
